For as long as we can remember, people have set their hopes for change to song. Whether a personal cause close to their hearts, or a more universal desire to improve the lives of others, by putting their story to music, their hopes often feel even more powerful. Sing United is proud to present a selection of the very best of these from pop and folk history, with each songwriter telling of their own dream for the future.
The fight for racial equality will be represented by classic Civil Rights movement anthems such as Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’, ‘People Get Ready’ by Curtis Mayfield, and the haunting ‘Strange Fruit’ by Billie Holiday. In addition, the show will also pay special tribute to some of the most important strong female artists. November 2018 sees the 100th anniversary of the passing into law of the Representation of the People Act. This was a huge victory in the cause to allow women the right to vote in Great Britain, and the Suffragette movement had been particularly active in contributing to this change in British law. Their campaigning had taken many forms, including music. Therefore, as well as songs such as ‘I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free’ by the iconic Nina Simone, and ‘We Shall Overcome’ by Joan Baez, we will also present our very own Suffragette Medley including the movement’s anthem ‘The March of the Women’.
Finally, as always with Sing United, there will also be music that focuses on the region we call home, this time represented by the 1850s protest song ‘The Toon Improvement Bill’ by Ned Corvan, and the singalong homage to Jarrow by folk vocal group Cockersdale.
